Summer Break - Intro to Mountaineering

Summer Break 2019 - Introduction to Mountaineering

Trip Status:
Please contact Eric Wakild if interested in this trip.

Monday, June 17th through Thursday, June 20th, 2019

Ages:  Rising 8th through 12th graders (who just graduated).  Space is limited.  Priority will be given to students who were wait-listed for previous expeditions.

Chaperones:  Mr. Eric Wakild (HS Math), Mr. Bryce Mercer (MS Science), Mr. Cavanaugh (Speech Pathologist)

Cost:  $250.  The cost of this trip is especially high because of the time requirement.  Students will also need to rent an ice ax and crampons.  Scholarships are always available; for this type of trip, 50% off is the best offer available ($150).  Please read the description on the Sage Expeditions website and then email Eric Wakild at to discuss the options.

Expedition Description:
We are headed to Mount Adams in Washington state to learn the basics of mountaineering!  After the drive over, we will hike all our gear into a basecamp at the "Lunch Counter."  From this camp, we will spend the next two days learning how to self arrest with an ice ax, how to walk on steep snow, and how to use crampons.  All the while, we will be learning how to cook, live, and thrive in comfort in the alpine environment.  Wednesday night, we will get an alpine start to summit Mt. Adams as a group!  Depending on conditions, there might be the option of a ski descent!

Student Expectations:
This longer expedition will require students to be flexible, willing to put the group before their own needs (at times), and excel with work like cooking, cleaning, and keeping organized.  Also, the trip will be extremely strenuous.  Students should be in excellent cardiovascular shape and be ready to backpack with heavy loads at a slow pace for multiple hours.  This is not the appropriate trip for someone's first time backpacking.

As a result, students will have a brief sit-down meeting with Mr. Wakild to go over these expectations and make sure the trip is a good fit for them.

Time:  Departure times on Monday, June 17th are still being decided by the group.  Expect the morning.  The hope would be to return by 8pm on Thursday, June 20th.

Mid-June weather on Mt. Adams can be unpredictable - expect anything from cold and snow to hot and sunny.  As the winter and spring play out, we will have a better sense of what to expect.  A complete gear and clothing list will be provided, and we will check gear before we leave.  A sturdy pair of boots (that will work with crampons) are mandatory.  Students will have to rent ice axes and crampons.  All food will be provided on this trip.

Please print and sign the Risk Waiver (You only need to complete this once per year for day/weekend trips).  If your student will be bringing and taking medication on the trip, please complete and turn in this Medication Form.
