Spring Break 2019 - Utah Slot Canyons

Trip Status:
Room Available

Monday, April 15th through Friday, April 19th, 2019

Ages:  6th through 12th graders.  Space is limited.  Priority will be given to students who were wait-listed for previous expeditions.

Chaperones:  Mrs. Dana Young (MS Math), Mr. Jon Kinney (Elementary SpEd), Mr. Ryan Freers (MS Science)

Cost:  $300.  The cost of this trip is especially high because of the time requirement.  Scholarships are always available; for this type of trip, 50% off is the best offer available ($150).  Please read the description on the Sage Expeditions website and then email Eric Wakild at eric.wakild@sageinternationalschool.org to discuss the options.

Expedition Description:
We are headed for southern Utah to Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument!  The highlight of the trip will be hiking a few of the amazing slot canyons - try to imagine a canyon that is only as wide as your shoulders but over 100 feet high!  All of our canyons can be done in 2-5 hours.  There will also be time to explore the surrounding areas - petrified forests, Native American ruins, dinosaur tracks in the rocks, to name a few!

Student Expectations:
This longer expedition will require students to be flexible, willing to put the group before their own needs (at times), and pitch in with work like cooking, cleaning, and keeping organized.  Also, the emphasis of this trip will be hiking - students should be physically able to walk 5+ hours over uneven terrain in all weather conditions.  Opting out of hiking is NOT an option for this trip.

As a result, students will have a brief sit-down meeting with Mr. Wakild to go over these expectations and make sure the trip is a good fit for them.

Time:  Departure times on Monday, April 15th are still being decided by the group.  Expect the morning.  The hope would be to return by 2pm on Friday, April 19th.

Spring in Southern Utah can be unpredictable - everything from cold and snow to hot and sunny.  Students will be given a gear list of clothes needed.  We will be car camping for the entirety of the trip; students will need sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and a tent.  Good hiking shoes/boots will be mandatory.  Sage Expeditions has extras of all of these for student use.  Students will also be given a list of gear needed - expect things like water bottle, day-use backpack, bowl and spoon/fork, etc.  All food will be provided on this trip.

Please feel out the Registration Form to sign up.  Please print and sign the Risk Waiver (You only need to complete this once per year for day/weekend trips).  If your student will be bringing and taking medication on the trip, please complete and turn in this Medication Form.
