MS Snowshoe Hike

Snowshoe in the Idaho Mountains - Middle School ONLY!

Trip Status:
Room Available

Date:
  Friday, March 8th, 2019

Ages:  6th through 8th graders.  This trip is strenuous - students need to be in good cardiovascular shape.  Space is limited.  Priority will be given to students who were wait-listed for previous expeditions.

Chaperones:  Mr. Eric Wakild (HS Math), Mr. Olsen (Substitute Teacher)

Cost:  $15 (not including rental gear).  The cost of this trip is especially low because it is expected that students might have to rent gear (see gear below).  Sage does not have snowshoes, boots, or poles for students to use.  Scholarships are always available (but not for rental gear).  Please read the description on the Sage Expeditions website and then email Eric Wakild at eric.wakild@sageinternationalschool.org to discuss the options.

Expedition Description:
Get outside and enjoy the Idaho winter!  We will travel north of Idaho City to the More's Creek Summit area.  We will follow the groomed trail for a while before we break off and make our own trail through the winter landscape.  We will hike for approximately 5 hours, with our goal to make it to the top of Pilot's Peak.

If the weather is too bad, our back up plan will be to hike in the Bogus Basin mountain area (not in the recreation area that requires a pass).  It is possible that the weather could be bad enough to cancel the entire trip.  Updates will be sent out before the trip.

Required Gear:
You will need the following gear.  If a student shows up without this gear, they will be sent home.
*Snowshoes
*Waterproof jacket and pants
*Non-cotton clothing, including warm hat and gloves
*Hiking Poles (recommended but not required)

Snowshoes and poles can be rented in town at a variety of places, including Intermountain Touring, Boise State University Outdoor Rental Program, Backcountry Pursuits, etc.  Proper clothing can be found a variety of places.  It is your responsibility to get the correct gear and reserve it early.

Time:  We'll meet at 8am in the main Sage parking lot with a departure time of 8:15am.  Plan to be back at Sage at 5pm.  We will call or text if we are significantly early or later.

Bring/Wear:
Please dress for the weather – while it will be cold outside, snowshoeing is a lot of work and you will get warm quickly.  Dress in layers that can be taken on or off. Warm hats and gloves are mandatory!  Food will not be provided - please bring lunch, snacks, and a water bottle.

Register:
Please feel out the Registration Form to sign up.  Please print and sign the Risk Waiver (You only need to complete this once per year for day/weekend trips).  If your student will be bringing and taking medication on the trip, please complete and turn in this Medication Form.
