Learn to Backcountry Ski

Learn to Backcountry Ski/Board!

Trip Status:
Room Available

Date:
  Friday, March 1st, 2019

Ages:  9th through 12th graders, although special consideration will be given to current 8th graders.  Space is limited.  Priority will be given to students who were wait-listed for previous expeditions.

Chaperones:  Mr. Danny Markow (Elementary PE), Mr. Eric Wakild (HS Math)

Cost:  $10.  The cost of this trip is especially low because it is expected that students might have to rent gear (see gear below).  Sage does not have backcountry gear for students to use.  Scholarships are always available (but not for rental gear).  Please read the description on the Sage Expeditions website and then email Eric Wakild at eric.wakild@sageinternationalschool.org to discuss the options.

Expedition Description:
Come try and learn something new!  This trip is designed for students who are expert skiers/boarders, and want to try backcountry skiing/boarding!  We will meet at Sage and drive up to the Moore's Creek Summit area.  We will have discussions about avalanche avoidance and how our beacons work.  We will then put on our skins, skin to the summit, and do as many runs as possible.  We'll enjoy off-piste snow, no lift lines, and great exercise.  You MUST be an expert rider and be comfortable riding in all snow conditions, as well as be in good physical condition.  This will be a strenuous trip.

This trip is very weather dependent.  We will not go to the backcountry if there is a risk of avalanche or the snow pack is unstable.  Plan B will be going to Bogus to ride off piste or in the side country.

Required Gear:
You will need a full backcountry set up.  This includes:
*Alpine Touring OR Telemark Skis OR Split Board with appropriate bindings and boots
*Skins
*Avalanche Beacon
*Probe
*Metal Shovel

This gear can be rented in town at a variety of places, including Intermountain Touring, Boise State University Outdoor Rental Program, Backcountry Pursuits, etc.  It is your responsibility to get the correct gear.

Time:  We'll meet at 8am in the main Sage parking lot with a departure time of 8:15am.  Plan to be back at Sage at 5pm.  We will call or text if we are significantly early or later.

Bring/Wear:
Please dress for the weather – while it will be cold outside, backcountry skiing is a lot of work and you will get warm quickly.  Dress in layers that can be taken on or off.  It's nice to have water proof pants and/or jackets to keep dry - we will be falling in the wet snow a lot as we learn!  Warm hats and gloves are mandatory!  Food will not be provided - please bring lunch, snacks, and a water bottle.

Register:
Please feel out the Registration Form to sign up.  Please print and sign the Risk Waiver (You only need to complete this once per year for day/weekend trips).  If your student will be bringing and taking medication on the trip, please complete and turn in this Medication Form.
